Best Sewing Patterns: Trench Coat Edition

Serious question – is there a coat as timeless as the trench? As every Autumn rolls around, I look forward to picking my first ever homemade trench out the wardrobe. It is such a staple, super versatile and goes with practically every outfit – AND I get to tell people I made it when they ask where it’s from (and even if they don’t). Being completely honest, it isn’t a quick project but it is so worth it and once you’ve made one, you’ll be planning your next one in no time.

For fabrics, gabardine is the classic option for high-end brands with its water-repellent properties, although twill would also work. For more unconventional but very beautiful choices, you could explore denim, a leather/faux leather or suede for a very AW24 look. Just make sure you pick something with enough structure (not too flimsy) and the world’s your oyster.

So now let’s get into the patterns…

1. Isla Trench

The Isla Trench by Named Clothing is the epitome of the classic double-breasted trench coat style, with a large collar, welt pockets, a cape and belt to bring the fit in around the waist. It is the first trench coat I ever made so I can vouch that the step-by-step instructions are super easy to follow, especially for trying news techniques like the welt pocket, as I was!

The attention to detail in this pattern makes this really special. It is truly a labour of love, but it is so worth it for how timeless this particular trench coat is.

2. Thompson Coat

This one is hot-off the press, with the pattern releasing on the 9th October. The Thompson Coat by Daughter Judy is a boxy trench style coat with sloped shoulders, welt pockets and a double-breasted button-down front. The pattern also comes in 2 views so you can choose between a shorter or longer style. But my personal highlight of this pattern is the option of adding a detachable hood, which is always needed if you live anywhere remotely rainy as I do.

What’s more, Daughter Judy donates 5% of every sale to nonprofits dedicated to improving the lives of garment workers, and to those leading the conversation on the environmental impacts of fast fashion – both hugely important topics at the heart of why I took up sewing in the first place.

3. Eliza Trench

Audible gasps at the Eliza Trench by Papercut Patterns. It embraces the trench style we’ve been seeing more this year, where the front is much more paired back, with one row of buttons and a smaller collar. What’s great about the Eliza Trench though is that it still incorporates much of the traditional trench style, with the back vent, belt, welt pockets (or patch pockets if you prefer!), and sleeve tabs, as well as being fully lined for extra warmth and detail. There is also the option to make the Eliza Trench in a shorter version if you wish.

The pattern comes in UK sizes 6-20, and Papercut Patterns offer the same pattern in their curve range, that comes in UK sizes 16-34 so there should be one for everyone – LOVE!

Hopefully, that has convinced you that making your own trench coat is SO worth it, and definitely not as daunting as it may seem when we’re blessed with so many great patterns. Set aside a few evenings or a weekend if you can, and before you know it, you’ll have a beautiful trench that’ll last you season after season. Stay tuned for plenty more autumnal sewing inspo xx
