Best Sewing Patterns: Pyjamas

In-keeping with the cosy theme, it was about time to share some of the best pyjama sewing patterns on the market because if there’s one staple I’m consistently reaching for at this time of the year, it’s the trusty pyjama set.

You heard correct, it’s time to ditch the joggers and oversized stained T-shirt, we’re levelling up our sleepwear game. Gingham sets are everywhere this season, it’s like a modern take on the traditional tartan. Or you may want to opt for something silkier and more luxurious. Either way, thanks to some very talented creators, it’s never been easier to make our own. Let’s get into it…

1. Pipit Loungewear

If I recall correctly, the Pipit Loungewear Set by Common Stitch was the first pattern I ever used when I started my sewing journey, and it’s one I’ve reached for time and time again since. It’s so simple, I actually ended up using the set as both pyjamas and daywear, but it’s so hard to resist when it comes out as beautifully as it does, and no one can ever tell.

The sleeves are super flowy and the elasticated waistband in the shorts makes the set comfy and airy. Of course, lengthen the shorts into trousers for extra warmth if needed, but this pattern is one for every season. Ps. the addition of bows instead of buttons for the top is so cute – really recommend!

2. Lahja Dressing Gown

Ok, so not strictly pyjamas, but how could the Lahja Dressing Gown by Named Clothing be missed off the list! It’s the perfect unisex dressing gown pattern with a short and long version to pick from, both with pockets and a belt to wrap up warm with.

The construction is mostly very simple, so perfect for sewists of all levels. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be living in a dressing gown over the Winter months so cost and time per wear is basically £0 – this one is a no-brainer.

(I will also be saving this pattern for a lovely linen/silk version for the Summer, but that’s one for another time…)

3. The Winnie

Another that’s been tried and tested over again by yours truly is the Winnie by Merchant and Mills – THE timeless, traditional pyjama style that works for everyone. It has a button down top, short or long sleeved, and either short or long bottoms with an elasticated back for extra comfort.

It is pitched towards the intermediate sewist, so if some of the techniques are new to you, take your time and it’ll pay off.  Trust me, it’s worth it because whilst you may spend the next few weeks/months in front of the TV finishing off festive chocolates and not being able to remember when you last left the house, the Winnie set will somehow make you feel just that little bit more put together.

4. Le Pyjamas

The Le Pyjama pattern from Atelier Brunette perfectly combines class and comfort in a pyjama set, for days and nights when you’re wanting to feel a little more sophisticated around the house. The top is really unique, with a simple V-neck collar, centre front seam and wide flowy sleeves. You can also choose between wide cut shorts or long pants with an elasticated waistband, again it goes without saying that a stretchy waistband is ALWAYS welcomed.

This pattern is really reasonably priced and comes as a pdf for you to print at home. Whilst you’re at it, you may as well have a browse of Atelier Brunette’s very own fabric collection too – super high quality and something for every project.

5. Fifi Pyjamas

The Fifi Pyjamas by Tilly and the Buttons is that girl of pyjamas patterns. It’s a gorgeous dainty set that is both comfortable and ever so slightly sexy as far as pyjamas go. The top has pleated cups that flow down from under the bust, and the shorts have an elasticated waistband and curved hems. The set is so cute, you’ll feel immediately put together that it’s worth cranking up the heating for just to wear around the house.

The team at Tilly and the Buttons also have a whole host of free pattern tutorials to complement the pattern, like how to make a full bust adjustment or info on sewing on the bias, so definitely worth checking out to get the perfect fit.

Now that’s covered, we can sleep better at night knowing that even our sleepwear is elevated and most importantly, made by us, with love. Happy sewing and sweet dreams, see you next time x
