Best Sewing Patterns: The Cosy Edit

If (like me) you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you will know that the temperatures are dropping and the long nights are coming in thick and fast. And whilst this can mean the occasional evening of dressing up for a nice wine bar or a dinner out, more often than not, it feels like the perfect time for cosying up and working our way through the entire Netflix catalogue.

The perfect capsule edit for cosy sewing calls out for oversized, thick cotton layered fits to keep us warm and cosy this Autumn/Winter. Let’s get into it!

1. The Oversized T-Shirt

First up, we have the Tyra Tee by Just Patterns. In a thick cotton, it’s THE oversized boxy tee you need in your wardrobe – baggy and relaxed enough for days lounging on the sofa, but chuck on some jeans or wide-leg pants and you have a super casual but chic daytime outfit. A win-win in my opinion.

With dropped shoulders for the relaxed fit, and a neat, ribbed neckline, it’s a super simple design so this one will be perfect for sewists of all abilities. They offer EU sizes 34-60 and the pattern comes as a PDF, so you can add to cart and start your project within minutes.

2. Crew Neck Sweater

Glory Allan’s Boxy Crew Neck Sweater in a thick cotton fleece is the perfect layer for keeping warm this Autumn/Winter. In keeping with the brands relaxed street-style aesthetic, the unisex sweater has dropped-shoulders and a very slightly cropped fit. A thicker cotton fleece will help to keep the boxy fit, but they do also have a Regular Crewneck style if you prefer something a little more fitted.

Both patterns come in sizes 3XS to 3XL and as paper-form or as PDFs, so there really are options for everyone. Glory Allan is such a great creator, with a whole YouTube channel full of helpful sewing tips and tricks and is huge on Tiktok (@glory.allan) so definitely check both out.

3. The Perfect Thick Hoodie

By Isa in Stitches, the Beginner Friendly Hoodie pattern is an essential for keeping cosy and warm as the temperatures drop. It comes with a double-layered hood, dropped shoulders and a front pocket – the classic Hoodie. This one comes in at or just above the hips, but of course, size up 1 or 2 times for a more oversized fit.

This pattern comes as a pdf with a super detailed, YouTube follow-along video (no written instructions here). Again, try to source a thick cotton jersey or French Terry to keep the volume and for the fit to look oversized as intended.

Just love the simplicity of this, I can’t wait to make one in every colour.

4. Multi-Way Sweatpants (!)

Immediately obsessed with the Tula Pants by Papercut Patterns. There’s nothing I love more than patterns with multiple options for fit and wear, and this one ticks the box in the biggest way. The Tula Pant can be wide-leg (personal favourite), tapered leg with an elasticated ankle for a more fitted look, or shorts, and all with either a plain elasticated waistband, or with a drawstring too. Phew, did you get all that?

In summary, this may just be the perfect all-rounder of trousers. For the cosy edit, of course we’ll be whipping them in a cosy warm fabric for eating chocolate on the sofa, but pick a lighter/smarter fabric and you can use the wide-leg fit style for anything other than hibernating. Papercut Patterns also offer this in their Curve range, and for kids – so there’s no excuse not to make matching sweatpants for the festive season.

Truly obsessed with these pants (can you tell?). Seriously, run don’t walk (and thank you Papercut for your services xx).
